  • Wesley-Barrell Craft Awards 2011 in Furniture and Vessels for the Interior

The 3rd Wesley-Barrell Award is taking applications in two categories from makers who focus on the use of traditional craft skills utilised in an innovative and contemporary way to create beautiful and hand-crafted one-off pieces. The Award consists of mentoring and a cash prize of £2500 for winners in each category, promotion for shortlisted designers at Art in Action and during the London Design Festival.

Previous winners include Design-Nation members Gareth Neal, Karen Lawrence and Katie Walker.

  • James Square , University of Plymouth two stage tender for £21,000 Public Art Commission

The landscaped space of James Square provides an attractive and accessible environment, which the University of Plymouth aims to enhance with the commission of a specially conceived sculpture providing visual punctuation and stimulus. The total allocated for the James Square Public Art Commission is £21,000 (incl. VAT), which will be awarded to an artist or a design team.

After five years, MUJI will once again be holding the international competition for MUJI AWARD.

The theme for this year’s awards will be “Long Lasting Design for Living.” MUJI is looking for designs suited to a modern lifestyle that incorporate the wisdom of past traditions, with a view of longevity where such designs will exist for the next 10, 50, even 100 years. The awards event will be held in China where rapid development and long history coexist, a land where tradition and future intersect. We look forward to brilliant ideas with surprising imagination.

Applications Open for the Nina Stewart Artist Residency at South London Gallery

The Nina Stewart Artist Residency is an open submission 6-month residency opportunity available to artists graduating between October 2012 and September 2013 with a postgraduate MA, MFA, PGDip or MRes from a UK institution.
Between November 2013 and April 2014, the resident will receive the following:
  • Rent-free accommodation in the South London Gallery’s Outset Artists’ Flat.
  • A rent-free studio space.
  • A bursary of £5,000 towards living expenses and production costs.
  • Monthly mentoring sessions with invited artists, curators and writers, as well as the Director and staff of the South London Gallery.
  • An exhibition in the SLG’s first floor galleries, with an opportunity to produce an accompanying publication

We have some really exciting opportunities that have come up in the Students’ Union. Over the last year we have run a project which placed two members of staff from the SU into LCC and CSM. The project has been a success and will now be rolled out across every college. This project allows us to increase the sense of community within the college and help students to put on events and other activities that will help to make them love their time at UAL and in their college.

We are therefore looking for three college engagement coordinators to help us establish what would have the greatest impact on the student experience and deliver some of our vital services from the college themselves. We’re looking to appoint one to work in LCF, one of LCC and one across Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon.

Eligibility criteria/
Professional artists, designers, architects and independent curators are eligible to apply.
The selection is based on artistic merits and the quality of artistic practice.

Applicants from outside the Nordic region are expected to master the Englih language.

The program is not available for students.
Short about residency/
The residency at the Nordic Artists' Centre includes a monthly grant of 6700 NOK, living and working space, as well as support of travel expenses up to 5500 NOK, which will be reimbursed on arrival.
Residency periods are 2 or 3 months.
The centre has five private residencies of various sizes for the selected artists, and five identical north-lit studios, each 50 m².

The Design Museum is looking for the next set of Designers in Residence for the 2013 programme.

Celebrating new and emerging design talent, the Design Museum’s annual Designers in Residence programme supports designers at an early stage in their career. The brief this year is Identity set by Design Museum Director, Deyan Sudjic:
“We use design to define who we are, both as individuals, and as societies. Designers can shape objects, places and processes to reflect the values and the identity of those who use them. This year, the Designers in Residence 2013 programme will be based on an exploration of how design in any field can be used to convey, to create, or to reflect a sense of identity. We invite product, furniture, fashion, graphic, spatial or interaction designers to explore these ideas in an object, an environment or an experience for their proposal.”

The RSA Student Design Awards scheme has rewarded craft, ingenuity, insight, communication and social benefit for 88 years.The RSA Student Design Awards competition issues briefs to young designers to demonstrate how the insights and processes of design can solve 21st century problems. We work with leading design educators develop the skill and confidence of young professionals while demonstrating to others the power of a design-led approach.
Work is judged on six criteria: social and/or environmental benefit, research, design thinking, commercial awareness, execution and 'magic'. The judging criteria are weighted differently for each brief.

The Cockpit Arts Setting Up Bursaries

We understand it can be difficult for designer-makers at the start of their career to make the leap from working from home to taking a place at Cockpit Arts. We’ve therefore developed a number of Bursaries that will specifically assist designer makers who have set up in business in the last three years. Bursaries will be made to selected applicants who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit as well as creative excellence and craft skill and who are seeking support to take their business to the next level. The Bursaries contribute towards a place at Cockpit for one year and include studio space, business development support, selling events and promotional opportunities. Each Bursary is worth up to £2,000 against the cost of the Cockpit Arts incubator package, with the remaining £2,000 fee being provided by the Bursary winners, payable on a monthly basis. Each Fellowship provides up to £11,000 towards developing, from within the Faculty, an innovative exhibition project of international standing that will form a core part of the future programme at the Stanley Picker Gallery.

Peckham Space is delighted to announce its third OPEN exhibition, entitled Join the Party!
The Peckham OPEN presents a great opportunity for anyone with a 'Peckham connection' to both exhibit and sell their work.

Anyone with a connection to Peckham is invited to submit work that will be exhibited at Peckham Space between 30 Nov - 20 Dec 2012.

It's free to take part and all work meeting the submission criteria will be included. This is definitely something to put on your CV. You can also sell the work you submit and Peckham Space will not take commission on sales.

This year you are invited to submit a piece of 2D or 3D work for display in the gallery, and proposals for performance work that will be featured in a one-of performance showcase on 6 Dec.

Prizes for ‘Best in Show’ will be given for 2D, 3D and performance works, with one prize for each category decided by a public-vote and another awarded by a specially-selected judging panel of artists and curators.

Competition - Design a Contemporary Canteen Collection

Transport for London (TfL) announce the launch of an exciting competition to design a bespoke range of utilitarian cutlery and crockery.
Entrants are invited to create a contemporary, functional yet stylish collection of cutlery and crockery with a strong graphic identity, inspired by the London Transport canteen history and design heritage.

Prize money is £3,000 and the winning design will be manufactured and sold on the TfL online shop
The prototypes of the winning design will be ready to see at designjunction in Milan in 2013

The Campaign for Drawing, in collaboration with the Guild of St George, announces a new art award: The John Ruskin Prize.
The prize will be awarded to the best wall mounted artwork on the theme A New Look at Nature, and is open to anyone over 18 working in painting, drawing, print-making or mixed media and resident or domiciled in the UK.
The Prize winner will receive £1000 and a specially commissioned pencil case. The winner’s artwork will be exhibited at Brantwood (John Ruskin’s Lake District home) and in the Millennium Gallery, Sheffield during the major autumn 2012 exhibition, Force of Nature: Picturing Ruskin’s Landscape.
Nine runners-up will be included in the exhibition of short-listed artists at Brantwood, and offered one night’s accommodation to attend the Private View, where the winner will be announced on 7 September.

1. The John Ruskin Prize is open to anyone over 18, resident or domiciled in the UK.

4. Submitted images should be sent as jpgs no bigger than 2MB. The jury will view them projected at a resolution of 1024 x 768px.

Have you got a great idea? Do you want to help it grow with up to £5,000 from us?
We have set up the SEED Fund for UAL students, graduates and staff to give you the opportunity to develop your creative idea into into a sustainable business or practice. You can also apply for the Fund if you have an existing project or early-stage business that you want to develop further.

SEE wants to support the creative community at UAL to create innovative projects and businesses. We have a series of grants of up to £5,000 available for the creation of innovative projects and businesses. If you're successful in your application, you'll also get access to a special business and intellectual property support programme.
You don't have to have a track-record in developing projects - we just want to find people with some good ideas and help them flourish.

The SEED Fund aims are to:

For project tracking purposes, evaluation and grant reporting, registered businesses must be based in the UK and while international collaborations and overseas market and sourcing are encouraged, the project must have a presence and base in the UK.
*If you are a UAL staff member, you need to ensure that you own all of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) used in the project or have obtained the necessary permissions from the owner(s) (including your employer, UAL) to use their IPR in your project. You would also be required to set up a company, in order to receive the grants.

The SEED Fund aims to help turn creative and innovative ideas into sustainable businesses and equip applicants with the right skills, experience, resource, expertise and support to achieve this.
Therefore, submissions should demonstrate the following:
• The proposal is an innovative idea or concept (can be applied to products, processes and/or services)
• The proposal presents a viable proposition which demonstrates market understanding
• The proposal shows that the idea has 'scalability' and sustainability (ie, potential to survive and thrive)
• The proposal demonstrates the skills and commitment of the applicant(s)
• The proposal shows how this project contributes to the applicants' future development
It is also desirable (though not critical) if your project demonstrates the following:
• It incorporates and develops cross-disciplinary collaboration (ie across colleges, disciplines, courses or research centres)
• It meets priorities as set out in UAL's medium term strategy (ie sustainability)
• It achieves match-funding and/or in-kind support (letters of support must be provided)

Artist Assistant needed for a solo exhibition project

This is an opportunity to work and gain experience with an artist in a studio complex at TEMPORARYCONTEMPORARY in Camberwell .

Currently I am looking for an intern/assistant to work on my upcoming solo exhibition at THE AGENCY GALLERY (www.theagencygallery.co.uk) in November 2011.

East-West Art Award 2011
Grand Prize is £2000. 2nd Prize is £500, 3rd Prize is £100. Best Student Prize is £100. There is also Encouragement Prize and each Judge’s Personal Favourite Prize.

However, the most important prize is that if you are selected for the short listed finalists (about 50 works) by our online judges, your actual work will be exhibited at La Galleria, Pall Mall, Central London in October for the final selection.

Eligible artists are any artists or art students in the UK and Europe and in Far East (Japan, China, South Korea etc) and South East Asia (Singapore, Thailand etc).

Our aim is to provide artists in the East and West with an opportunity to show their works and hopefully our judges uncover talent and help promote their success internationally.

A design contest for urban beauty

As of today, the 5th edition of the design contest HI-MACS® is launched and will focus on the exciting theme of urban furniture. Retro public benches, futuristic flower boxes, telephone kiosks from a different planet… Everything is allowed.

Following the success of previous competitions, on the theme of __lamps__ in 2009, __restaurants__ in 2008 and __bathrooms__ in 2007, HI-MACS is continuing its student adventure to find new talent in the intimate world of international design.

The leading new feature of this edition is that it has been opened up to professionals. You can now choose to participate in one of these two categories: “student” or “professional”. Students will have to provide evidence that they are currently in education.

How to participate?

If you feel that you have what it takes to be an international designer, let your talent and ambition speak for themselves! It is easy to participate: start by reading the rules, and send us your project before 30th April 2011 at midnight.

What about the winners?

The finalists will be selected in May 2011. Their projects will be produced and exhibited in real size during London design week in September and transferred to the European stage to 25,000 architects/designers and 1,700 specialist journalists. Following this exhibition, a jury of famous designers will select the winner of the HI-MACS® contest during a ceremony. For more details about the prizes, click here.

Gyeonggi International Ceramix Biennale 2011 International Competition calls for artists from April 1 to May 31, 2011.The Korea Ceramic Foundation (KOCEF) would like to announce that the Gyeonggi International Ceramix Biennale 2011, which will be held for 30 days from September 24, 2011. The International Competition, one of the main parts of the biennale, has been a dynamic forum where the latest issues facing contemporary ceramics are explored since 2001. In the previous competition in 2009, we received big attention the world over; 1,726 artists from 70 countries submitted 3,196 artworks.
International Competition 2011 - Open to ceramic artists the world over.
Works in collaboration with other genres are all welcome but the majority of the works should be ceramic. The winners of the competition will receive the large cash prizes.

Submission of Images for Preliminary Screening, from April 1 to May 31, 2011Only online submissions will be acceptable. (**www.kocef.org**) Digital images of the work, minimum 1,100 pixels wide in jpeg format are necessary. A single entry should be – when displayed – within these specified dimensions: 250cm (width); 250cm (depth); 250cm (height).
Submission of Actual Works for Final Selection, from July 21 to August 15, 2011.
At the final selection, all prizewinners will be determined. All entries that make it to the final round of screening may not be awarded. In this case, these works will be returned by KOCEF.
